Blood Pressure Variability and Dementia: A Mendelian Randomization Study

This study explored the link between bitter taste perception and the likelihood of developing high blood pressure. Researchers discovered that certain genotypes of the TAS2R38 gene, responsible for bitter taste perception, were associated with a reduced risk of hypertension. Specifically, individuals with the AAV and PAV genotypes had a lower likelihood of developing high blood pressure. This reduced risk may be due to the functionality of bitter taste receptors, which are connected to salt intake aversion. These findings indicate that genetic variations in the bitter taste gene could impact hypertension risk and may be targeted for future therapeutic interventions. However, the absence of AVI/AVI genotype participants in this study limits understanding of the influence of these genotypes on hypertension risk.
