Depression, Insomnia, Treatment Adherence, and Metabolic Control in Type 2 Diabetes

This study looked at the relationship between depressive symptoms and insomnia with therapeutic non-adherence and metabolic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It involved 171 adult patients who were being treated for type 2 diabetes. The study found that symptoms of depression occurred in 61.9% of patients, and 59% suffered from insomnia. The study also found a relationship between depression and insomnia, as well as between worse adherence to treatment and more depressive symptoms and insomnia. Patients with poor metabolic control had more depressive symptoms and insomnia. The study concludes that depressive symptoms were significantly related to non-adherence to treatment and to worse metabolic control, but not the presence of insomnia without depressive symptoms.
